There is a moment, just after the diyas are lit on a Diwali evening, when a room transforms. The ordinary surfaces — the table, the shelf, the threshold — become stages. The Mayura Deepa is designed for exactly that moment, and for every evening that deserves one.
This is a matched pair of handcrafted brass peacock oil lamps, each one a composition in three parts. A proud peacock stands at the back of the oil bowl, its full circular fan tail displayed behind it — each feather individually cast, the outer ring beaded, the inner circle radiating like a mandala or the sun. The peacock's body is engraved with the characteristic dot-cluster plumage of a bird in its finest moment. The oil bowl beneath sits wide and engraved on its rim with continuous beaded detailing. And the base — a wide conical pedestal — is covered in relief-carved lotus and foliate motifs, rising from the surface with the depth of a piece that took patience to make.
Light oil lamps in both and place them facing each other on a pooja table, a mantelpiece, or either side of an entrance threshold — and the pair creates an axis of light and beauty that no single lamp can achieve. In Indian tradition, the Mayura brings grace and auspiciousness; placed in pairs, that energy is doubled, mirrored, and directed inward toward the home.
At dusk, with flames lit, the antique dark gold brass catches the orange light and deepens to the colour of temple gold. The peacocks glow. The room remembers what it is for.
