"Fill it with water. Float a flower. Three elephants will carry the rest."

The urli is one of the oldest vessels in Indian domestic life — the wide, round, open bowl set at the centre of a home or courtyard and filled with water, floating flowers, and lamps. It is the vessel of welcome, the vessel of festivals, the vessel that turns a plain surface into a focal point simply by existing. The Gaja Kamala Urli is this vessel raised to its most ornamental form — a white metal bowl in antique silver tone, its entire belly worked in deep repoussé relief with a continuous band of blooming lotus flowers and scrolling leaves, standing on three fully sculpted elephants that serve as its feet.

The body is white metal — an alloy prized for its bright, cool, silver-toned finish — given an antique patina that settles into the recesses of the relief and leaves the raised surfaces bright. The lotus band is worked in repoussé: the design hammered outward from the inside of the bowl so that each lotus, each leaf, each curling stem stands physically proud of the surface, catching light and throwing shadow. Above the lotus band, the wide flared rim is finished with a delicate cross-hatch and floral border. Below, a band of petal-shaped lobing steps down to the base.

The three elephant feet are the piece's signature — each a small, complete, caparisoned elephant with trunk raised, standing guard beneath the bowl and lifting it clear of the surface. In Indian tradition the elephant carrying a vessel is a specific and auspicious motif: the strength that bears abundance, the guardian that supports the sacred. Three of them lift the Gaja Kamala Urli into the air and give it the presence of a temple object rather than a household one.

Fill it with water and float marigolds, jasmine, or rose petals. Float three tealight diyas on Diwali. Leave it empty and let the relief speak. The Gaja Kamala Urli is the centrepiece the rest of the table arranges itself around.
